Lopez receives highest recognition from German government Lopez Group chairman, Oscar M. Lopez, was bestowed the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit (Verdienstkreuz I, Klausse) of the Federal Republic of Germany for his outstanding achievements as businessman and as a promoter of Philippine-German cooperation and friendship.

German ambassador Dr. Axel Weishaupt said, "This is the very first time that a Philippine businessman has received this highest award from Germany."

Lopez has been co-chairman of the Philippine-German Business Council since 2001.

In his remarks, Lopez said the award also recognizes the role played by his late father, Don Eugenio H. Lopez, Sr., "in initiating, developing and nurturing Philippine-German business relations in the early years." Lopez, Sr., then head of Meralco, contracted for four power plants with German company Siemens in 1969, the first major contract between a Filipino and a German company.

Lopez expressed hope that the best years of Philippine-German relations are yet to come. The Lopez Group will once again join the German Embassy and the local German community in celebrating German month in October 2005. "We hope to focus on the aspects of our relationship that today constitute the solid foundation of our enduring ties," he said.
