The weak performance of major investees and higher interest payments led Benpres Holdings Corporation to a loss of P182 million for the nine months ended September 30, 2001, compared to a net loss of P174 million in the same period last year. However, equity in net losses of investees decreased by 30% from the same period last year to P425 million due to the strong performance of First Philippine Holdings Corporation (FPHC).

Star TV Asia Statement by Carlos V. Tria

In peso terms, this translates to P520 MILLION (P52/US$) against P231 MILLION (P42/US$) in the old contract for five channels.

STAR TV was actually trying to bully us into buying a bundle of six channels on a "take all or nothing" basis, including three channels for which we already have equivalent service. We initially wanted only three channels: Star Sports, Star Movies and ESPN. During negotiations, we tried to accommodate as many as five channels and increased our offer price accordingly.
