BAYAN Telecommunications, Inc. vice-chairman Eugenio Lopez III today (18 August) called on the government to reward compliant carriers with authority to operate nationwide as it studies what penalties to impose on carriers who failed to meet their rollout commitments.

Four big institutions led investors who anchored bids for the US0 million-senior notes issued by Bayan Telecommunications, Inc. (BTI), the telecoms unit of the Benpres Group, resulting in an oversubscription. Lehman Brothers and Bear Stearns, joint lead managers and bookrunners of the debt issue, listed 45 international funds wanting to take up to US0 million in bonds. US houses Huff, Alliance Capital, Miller Anderson and Loomis Sayles were primary subscribers to the float.

Gina Lopez receives UNESCO Kalinga Prize for '98

Regina Paz Lopez, managing director of ABS-CBN Foundation, shared the UNESCO Kalinga Prize for 1998 with Brazil-based Italian physicist Ennio Candotti in awards rites recently held in New Delhi. The UNESCO Kalinga Prize - established in 1951 -- is presented annually in recognition of the awardee's "outstanding contribution to the interpretation of science and technology to the general public.

ABS-CBN declares cash dividend

The board of directors of ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. declared a cash dividend of P0.40 per share for stockholders of record as of April 15 and payable on May 14, 1999. ABS-CBN shares trade ex-cash on April 8. The annual stockholders' meeting of the company is set for May 3. Stockholders as of April 5 are entitled to attend and vote at the meeting.

Secretary Araneta in new salvo for domestic tourism
Tourism Secretary Gemma Cruz-Araneta will launch on March 19 the first comprehensive domestic tourism network in the country organized by the Lopez Group. Ms. Araneta will lead ceremonies to mark the start of operations of an internet website, reservation system and cable television travel channel all strictly devoted to the promotion of Philippine destinations.
